New Wildanet broadband boosts vital connectivity for Cornwall Air Ambulance

New high speed digital connectivity is helping save lives across Cornwall, thanks to a major internet upgrade for the Cornwall Air Ambulance completed by Cornish broadband provider Wildanet.

Cornwall Air Ambulance Trust (CAAT), the lifesaving charity that responds to critical incidents across Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, recently switched providers to Wildanet and has praised the company for its solutions delivering reliable and fast connectivity for its crucial headquarters and helicopter base as well as its wider operations.

Set up more than 38 years ago, the charity plays a critical role in providing pre-hospital emergency care across Cornwall, covering some of the UK’s most isolated and rugged stretches coast and moorland, where helicopter access is often the only way to reach patients in time.

But it’s not just in the air that speed matters. On the ground, digital infrastructure underpins everything from running critical operational systems at headquarters to processing donations and managing stock and payments in its network of shops.

Joel Henthorn, CAAT Data and Insights Manager, said: “Prior to working with Wildanet, we were with a single provider and we had very little choice. Moving to Wildanet, that's all changed. I really feel like they've got our back. They've provided the right solutions for reliable and fast connectivity across all of our sites.

“Having the really reliable and fast connectivity is helping us deliver our goal of gold standard stewardship to all the people that support the charity, helping everyone feel a bit more connected to the mission.”

Wildanet, headquartered in Liskeard, has worked closely with CAAT’s IT and maintenance teams to ensure a smooth transition - including during the opening of a new retail site in Wadebridge.

Lisa Pompa, Retail Store Manager at Wadebridge, said: “Our shops are a vital part of the Trust and the face of the charity. Wildanet were really supportive during the transition into the new shop and they worked closely with us to ensure all our needs were met.

“It has made a huge difference to how we process stock, research prices and carry out customer transactions. Without good internet, we wouldn't be able to do any of that and by providing that reliable, fast technology it has enabled us to run the shop really well and be very successful.”

Wildanet’s installation work wasn’t without its challenges - navigating existing infrastructure and routing underground cables required flexibility and problem-solving. But the result is a robust, high-speed network that now supports both the operational and fundraising arms of the charity.

Wildanet has also supported one of the Trust’s flagship annual events, Helifest, deploying mobile Wi-Fi to provide connectivity and payments services for organisers and the many trade stalls which support the hugely popular day.

Julia Jeffery, CAAT Corporate Partnerships Manager, said: “Cornwall Air Ambulance is really important for Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, so I'm always really proud to work with a local company that's equally looking to give back.

“It’s been amazing working with such a committed and supportive team at Wildanet who are clearly dedicated also to giving back to the local community. They've enabled us to get our high-speed internet right the way across our shops and HQ. It has been a great partnership working with Wildanet; very people-oriented - with a can-do attitude - and the customer service has been brilliant.”

James Bennett, Wildanet Business Development Manager, said: “I think it's important for Wildanet, as a Cornish company, to be supporting Cornish business and a hugely important local charity like Cornwall Air Ambulance.

“It's about how can we deliver the services to the Air Ambulance that supports them going forward, make savings where it's possible, but enhancing their ability to work with their customers and deliver this fantastic service.

“There's always challenges when you're trying to use existing infrastructure and we've just adapted and made sure we kept our focus and delivered what we said we were going to deliver and I am very proud to be part of that.”

Wildanet has become a key player in Cornwall and Devon’s digital revolution, rolling out Full Fibre broadband to thousands of homes and businesses across the region. This includes delivery of three multi-million-pound contracts to extend gigabit-capable broadband to more than 37,000 premises across Cornwall as part of Project Gigabit, the UK government’s rollout of lightning-fast, reliable broadband across the UK. The provision of Full Fibre broadband to Cornwall Air Ambulance is yet another example of local organisations (and the community-at-large) benefiting from this transformative upgrade to Cornwall’s digital infrastructure.
